About Karen Miller

Karen Miller retired in 2004 from the Penn State Medical Center in Hershey, Pennsylvania, after a career of more than 20 years with a variety of health care intstitutions in the midwest, south and northeastern United States.  Her positions ranged from Staff Assistant and Secretary to Administrative Supervisor and Office Manager.

After working for the Dakota Hospital-Home Health Agency in Vermillion, South Dakota in 1985-86, she assumed duties with the Speech & Hearing Clinic at the University of South Dakota, followed by a five-year stint as Office Supervisor in the University of South Dakota School of Medicine.

When the Millers moved to Mississippi in 1993 so that Larry could head the state agency responsible for public broadcasting, the folks at the University of Mississippi Medical Center recognized Karen’s experience in the health profession and hired her as Administrative Secretary in their Residency Division.  Four years later she transferred to the School of Pharmacy, where she remained until the Millers relocated to Pennsylvania in 2001. Again, her strong background in health care led her to the Penn State Medical Center in the residency program.

Earlier in her career, Karen worked for the Chadron (NE) Record newspaper, performing a multitude of chores from typesetting to proofreading. This provided excellent experience in preparing her for a graphics composition position some years later with the Jenks (OK) Public Schools, where she was engaged in a wide range of print duties, including graphic design and layout to creating camera ready materials for newsletters, fliers, brochures and booklets.

A graduate of Chadron (NE) High School, Karen attended Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, while Larry was managing the public radio station there. In addition to raising two children and supporting Larry in his endeavors, Karen also pursued her own successful career. Along the way, she was involved in numerous social and community activities. She was Co-Chairperson of the Faculty Wives Club at Oklahoma State University for a project that led to raising funds necessary for a major addition to the Journalism and Broadcasting Building in the 1970s. She was an officer of the Lahoma Newcomers Club in Stillwater, Oklahoma and also chaired the Publicity Committee for the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority in Austin, Texas.  She was twice recognized for her outstanding work at the University of South Dakota, including receipt of the “Spark Plug” award in the University Affiliated Program, and as recipient of the May 1990 “Employee of the Month” award among all university employees.

Karen’s collaboration with Larry in Galey Enterprises is the latest chapter in a 43-year partnership that brings to mind the comparison of dancer Fred Astaire to his co-star Ginger Rogers.  Ginger did everything Fred did -- except she did it dancing backwards and in high heels!

Karen is deeply committed to her family -- especially those three granddaughters -- and her faith. She continues to be involved in a variety of church activities in South Dakota, just as she was in Pennsylvania and Mississippi. She and Larry enjoy traveling, biking, and golf.
